Turnitin AI Report Checker in the United States: Check Before You Submit
If you study in the United States, there is a good chance your essays pass through Turnitin before a professor reads them. Since 2023 that check has included an AI writing score that most students never get to see. A Turnitin AI report checker lets you see that score, and the highlighted sentences behind it, before you hit submit.
How US colleges use Turnitin AI detection
American institutions do not follow one national rule. Each college, and often each instructor, decides how to treat the AI score:
- Some switched it off. Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin's AI detector in August 2023. It calculated that even a 1% false positive rate, applied to the roughly 75,000 papers it submitted in 2022, could mean around 750 students wrongly flagged.
- Many kept it on with caveats. Faculty guidance at numerous universities tells instructors to treat the score as a reason for a conversation, never as proof.
- Individual instructors still rely on it. Even where policy urges caution, a high percentage changes how a professor reads your paper.
The practical result for US students: you rarely know in advance whether the AI score will be used, and you almost never see it yourself.
Why US students check their AI score first
- Canvas, Blackboard and Brightspace hide the AI score from students. You see a similarity flag, your professor sees the AI percentage.
- Grammar and editing tools can trigger flags. Heavy rewriting by AI-assisted editors can make your own work look machine-written.
- Non-native English writers face more scrutiny. International students in US programs often write in the formal, predictable style detectors associate with AI.
- High-stakes work. Capstones, theses, scholarship essays and graduate applications are worth checking before they leave your hands.
What you get
For each document you upload, you receive two PDFs in the Turnitin format your professor sees:
- A similarity report with overall similarity, match groups and top sources.
- An AI writing report with the AI percentage and every flagged sentence highlighted.
Here is a complete example.
Sample Turnitin AI and similarity reports
Both screenshots below come from the same 24-page, 6,364-word paper. The similarity report found 1% overall similarity. The AI writing report flagged 51% of the qualifying text as likely AI-generated. Tap either one to see it full size.

Reading your result
If your report shows *%, Turnitin found under 20% and shows no highlights. If it shows a figure of 20% or more, read the highlighted sentences closely. Our guide on how to read a Turnitin report walks through each section, and how to see your Turnitin report on Canvas covers what you can see after you submit.
