Can Turnitin Detect AI Humanizers? Bypasser Detection Explained
Yes, Turnitin can detect many AI humanizers. Since 27 August 2025 its AI writing report includes AI bypasser detection, built to flag AI text that a humanizer tool has rewritten. It is not perfect, and it only works on English papers, but "run it through a humanizer and submit" is no longer safe. Here is how the detection works, what it misses, and how to get a paper to 0% AI without being flagged.
How Turnitin detects humanized text
Turnitin's AI detector does not look for the name of a tool. It breaks your paper into overlapping chunks of sentences and scores how likely each chunk is to come from a large language model. Humanizers change the words, but they tend to leave a statistical trace of their own: predictable synonym choices, oddly uniform sentence rhythm, and phrases that no student would write. Turnitin says it studied the leading humanizers and trained its model on that trace.
In the AI writing report you will see this in two places:
- AI-generated only. Since the August 2025 update this category also includes AI text that was likely modified by an AI bypasser (humanizer) tool.
- AI-generated text that was AI-paraphrased. AI text that went through a paraphraser or word spinner such as QuillBot.
Newer report layouts combine both into one line, as in the screenshot below: "AI-generated: likely generated or likely generated and revised by AI".
Can Turnitin detect every humanizer?
No. Turnitin itself warns that its AI score may misidentify writing and should not be used alone to punish a student. In practice:
| Situation | Likely result |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT text run once through a free humanizer | Often flagged, sometimes as a high score |
| Text run through a paraphraser like QuillBot | Often flagged as AI-paraphrased |
| Text from a strong paid humanizer, then edited by you | Often low or 0%, but it varies by paper |
| Text rewritten by a person | Typically 0% or an asterisk (under 20%) |
| Papers in Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, German, Dutch or Turkish | Bypasser detection does not run, but normal AI detection does |
Also note that Turnitin needs at least 300 words of prose to produce an AI score, and anything from 1% to 19% is shown as an asterisk rather than a number.
The Turnitin humanizer update in 2026
Turnitin keeps retraining the detector. It improved recall on 12 February 2026 and updated the English model again on 14 October 2026. Updates are not applied to old reports, so a paper you checked last month may score differently if you resubmit it today. That is why the only reliable test is a fresh Turnitin AI report on your final file.
How to avoid being flagged
- Do not rely on a tool alone. Every tool has a signature. Edit its output yourself.
- Rewrite structure, not words. Merge and split sentences, reorder points, add a concrete example from your course.
- Keep your own voice. Write the introduction and conclusion yourself.
- Check on Turnitin itself, not a free detector. See how to check humanized text.

Frequently asked questions
Can Turnitin detect AI humanizers?
Often, yes. Since 27 August 2025 Turnitin's AI writing report includes AI bypasser detection, trained on the signals leading humanizer tools leave in text.
Does bypasser detection work in every language?
No. Bypasser and AI-paraphrase detection run on English papers only. Other supported languages get standard AI detection.
Does Turnitin name the humanizer I used?
No. The report shows highlighted sentences and an AI percentage, not the tool.
How can I avoid a humanizer being detected?
Rewrite structure rather than words, edit any tool output yourself, or use human editing, then confirm with a real Turnitin AI report.
