Turnitin AI Report Checker in Canada: What Students Need to Know
Canadian universities have taken some of the clearest public positions on Turnitin's AI detector, and they do not agree with each other. That makes a Turnitin AI report checker useful in Canada for a slightly different reason than elsewhere: you need to know your score for the courses, instructors and publishers that still use it.
Where Canadian universities stand
- University of British Columbia announced in 2023 that it would not enable Turnitin's AI detection feature, and later reaffirmed that decision.
- University of Waterloo discontinued Turnitin's AI detection functionality as of September 2025, while keeping similarity checking.
- Other institutions and colleges keep the feature available to instructors, usually with guidance that the score is not proof of misconduct on its own.
Similarity checking remains widespread. Even at universities that never turned on AI detection, Turnitin's similarity report is still part of how assignments are reviewed.
When Canadian students still need an AI check
- Colleges and polytechnics where the AI indicator is enabled for faculty.
- Online and partner programs delivered with US or UK universities that use the detector.
- Graduate students submitting to journals, since many publishers screen manuscripts for AI writing.
- International students writing in a second language, whose formal style is more likely to be misread as AI.
- Students at institutions that turned it off who still want evidence their writing reads as their own, in case questions come up another way.
Bilingual note for Quebec and francophone programs
Turnitin's AI writing detection supports English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, German, Dutch and Turkish. French is not on Turnitin's supported list as of October 2026, so French-language papers are unlikely to receive an AI score. Similarity checking still works. If you write in English at a francophone institution, the AI check applies normally.
