Turnitin AI Report Checker in Germany: German and English Texts
For years, students in Germany could assume Turnitin's AI detector simply ignored German text. That changed on 6 October 2026, when Turnitin added AI writing detection for German, Dutch and Turkish submissions. If you write a Hausarbeit, Bachelorarbeit or Masterarbeit, in German or in English, here is what that means and how to check your work first.
What changed on 6 October 2026
- German AI detection. Turnitin now produces an AI writing score for long-form German text, alongside English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Dutch and Turkish.
- EU data storage. Turnitin announced regional storage of Feedback Studio data in Frankfurt am Main, an important point for German data-protection expectations.
- Paraphrase detection remains English-only. The detection group for AI-generated text that was then paraphrased or "humanised" works on English submissions only.
How German universities check work
German higher education has historically used a mix of plagiarism tools, and practice varies by Hochschule and even by Lehrstuhl. Many theses are also checked against a signed declaration of independent work (eidesstattliche Erklärung), which in many programs now covers the use of AI tools. Where Turnitin is licensed, the new German-language AI score gives examiners one more indicator to consider.
Who in Germany should run a check
- Students writing in German at institutions using Turnitin, now that German text can receive an AI score.
- International students in English-taught master's programs, a large and growing group in Germany.
- Doctoral candidates submitting English articles to international journals.
- Anyone who used DeepL or an AI tool to translate or polish text, since translated and heavily smoothed prose can resemble AI output.
