Turnitin German AI Detection: Does Turnitin Detect AI in German?
Yes, Turnitin now detects AI writing in German. Since 6 October 2026, German-language submissions can receive an AI writing score through Turnitin Originality, and through iThenticate 2.0 with the AI add-on. That covers a Hausarbeit, Bachelorarbeit, Masterarbeit or Dissertation written in German, in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Here is what changed and what it does not cover.
What changed on 6 October 2026
- German AI score. Before this date, German text received a similarity report only. Now it also gets an overall percentage of likely AI-generated text and highlighted sentences.
- Launched with Dutch and Turkish. Turnitin now detects AI in seven languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Dutch, German and Turkish.
- Old reports stay as they were. A paper checked before the launch was not scored for AI. A new upload is.
German vs English: what your report includes
| Feature | German | English |
|---|---|---|
| Similarity report (Plagiatsprüfung) | Yes | Yes |
| AI writing percentage | Yes (since 6 Oct 2026) | Yes |
| AI-paraphrase detection | No | Yes |
| AI bypasser detection | No | Yes |
The paraphrase and bypasser groups are English-only, according to Turnitin's own guide.
How German-speaking universities use Turnitin
Use varies by Hochschule, faculty and even by Lehrstuhl. Some examples:
- Germany: universities such as Kassel, Konstanz and Bielefeld publish Turnitin guides for staff and students. Many theses are also submitted with a signed declaration of independent work (eidesstattliche Erklärung) that now often covers AI use.
- Austria: at BOKU University in Vienna, Turnitin is a service for teachers, used through BOKUlearn or a standalone web app with a German interface. See our Austria guide.
- Switzerland: practice differs between cantonal universities and the ETH domain. See our Switzerland guide.
Whether the German AI score is visible depends on your institution switching it on. Ask your Prüfungsamt or library if you are unsure.
What can raise a German AI score
- Text written in English by AI and translated with DeepL or a similar tool.
- Paragraphs polished with an AI "improve my German" tool until they read evenly and generically.
- Theory chapters generated from prompts and only lightly edited.
Requirements
- At least 300 words of prose; at most 30,000 words per file. Check a long Dissertation chapter by chapter.
- .docx, .pdf, .txt or .rtf, under 100 MB.
