Is Turnitin Free? Can You Use Turnitin for Yourself?

How-to guidesBy the AIandSimilarityReports.com teamPublished 2026-10-214 min read

Turnitin is free for students in one sense: your school or university pays for it, so you submit through your course at no cost. But Turnitin is not free to download, install or buy as an individual, and there is no official free Turnitin plagiarism checker for personal use. Here is how access works and how to check your own paper on Turnitin.

Is Turnitin free for students?

Yes, when your institution has a licence. You submit through Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, Brightspace, Teams or turnitin.com using your class details, and you pay nothing. But your instructor controls what you see. Most students never see the AI writing report. See how to see the AI report as a student.

Can I download or install Turnitin for free?

No. Turnitin is a web service, not software you install, and there is no official desktop app or free download. Sites offering a "Turnitin free download" or "install Turnitin free" are not Turnitin. Some instructors enable a Turnitin add-in for Microsoft Word through the institution; see Turnitin and Word.

Can you use Turnitin for yourself?

Not directly. Turnitin does not sell accounts to individuals. Your options are:

Option	Free?	Limits
A draft assignment your instructor sets up	Yes	Only if your course offers it; AI report usually hidden
Turnitin Draft Coach (Word or Google Docs)	Yes, if your institution licenses it	Limited similarity checks; not the full report
Free plagiarism checkers	Yes	Not Turnitin's database or AI model
A Turnitin report checker like ours	No, $3.99	Full similarity and AI reports, no repository storage

How to use a Turnitin self-checker

Create an account and buy a slot.
Upload your .docx or .pdf.
Download both reports from your dashboard, usually within minutes.

Your paper is not saved to Turnitin's repository, so it will not match itself when you submit for real. More: check your score before submitting.

Is the Turnitin plagiarism checker free anywhere else?

Be careful with "free Turnitin" sites. Many show a made-up score or use a different checker. Learn to spot fakes in Turnitin report checker and free Turnitin plagiarism checker. For what institutions pay, see how much Turnitin costs.

Human editing service

Let our editors humanize it to 0% AI

Send your document and a human editor rewrites every passage Turnitin flags, in natural and clear language, until the AI writing score reaches 0%. Then the editor proofreads the whole paper for grammar, flow and consistency. No AI rewriting tools are used, so there is no humanizer pattern for Turnitin's bypasser detection to pick up.

Want to humanize it yourself? Use StealthWriter Pro

If you would rather do the rewriting yourself, the best tool for the job is StealthWriter on its paid Pro plans. The paid plans unlock the stronger Ghost model and longer passages per run. The free plan only gives you the lighter Ninja model with short inputs, which is not enough for a full assignment.

Humanize one section at a time, not the whole paper in one go.
Read every paragraph afterwards. Fix any changed meaning, and put back technical terms, quotes and citations exactly as they were.
Add your own touches: a specific example, a sentence about your sources, your course's terms.
Run a Turnitin AI report on the result before you submit. No tool can promise 0% every time.
