How to Check Your Turnitin Score Before Submitting
Testing your paper on Turnitin before the deadline is the simplest way to avoid surprises. There are three ways to do it, and they differ in what you see and whether your test leaves a trace in Turnitin's database.
How to check your Turnitin score before submitting: quick answer
- If your course has a draft assignment, submit there and check the similarity score.
- If resubmissions are allowed, submit early, read the report, then resubmit (up to three times before the 24-hour wait).
- If neither is available, or you need your AI score, use a pre-submission check that returns both Turnitin reports to you.
Option 1: A draft or practice assignment
Some instructors create a separate draft assignment so students can see their similarity score before the real deadline. If your course has one, use it.
- You see: usually the similarity report only.
- Watch out: if the draft assignment saves papers to the repository, your final submission can match your own draft. Ask your instructor whether the draft is set to "no repository".
Option 2: Resubmitting to the real assignment
If resubmissions are allowed, you can submit early, check the report, then resubmit a revised version.
- You see: the similarity report, if your instructor shows it to students.
- Watch out: after more than three submissions, Turnitin delays new reports by 24 hours. See how long Turnitin reports take.
Option 3: A pre-submission check
A pre-check runs your paper through Turnitin and returns the reports to you directly.
- You see: both the similarity report and the AI writing report, which your course usually hides.
- No trace: our checks run without adding your paper to the student paper repository.
- No attempts used: your course submission count is untouched.
Which test should you use?
| Need | Best option |
|---|---|
| Quick similarity check, course allows drafts | Draft assignment |
| See your AI score | Pre-submission check |
| Thesis or dissertation, high stakes | Pre-submission check, then final submission once |
| No Turnitin access through your course | Pre-submission check |
What your test results look like
Both screenshots below come from the same 24-page, 6,364-word paper. The similarity report found 1% overall similarity. The AI writing report flagged 51% of the qualifying text as likely AI-generated. Tap either one to see it full size.

Check your assignment before submitting: checklist
- Similarity below your course's usual limit, with no single source above about 5%.
- Nothing left in the "Not Cited or Quoted" match group.
- Reference list under a clear heading such as "References".
- AI score checked, and any highlighted passages rewritten in your own voice.
- File saved as .docx or a text PDF, not a scan.
After testing
- Fix matches in the "Not Cited or Quoted" group first.
- Rewrite any AI-highlighted passages in your own voice, adding your own analysis and examples.
- Keep your drafts and notes in case you are asked how you wrote the paper.

AI score too high? Humanize it to 0%
If your Turnitin AI writing report flags your paper, you can rewrite the highlighted sentences yourself, use a humanizer, or let our editors do it by hand. Since August 2025 Turnitin also detects text run through AI humanizer tools, so check which approach still works: best AI humanizer for Turnitin, can Turnitin detect humanizers? and how to get 0% AI on Turnitin.
Frequently asked questions
Can I submit a draft to Turnitin to test it?
Only if your instructor set up a draft or practice assignment, or allows resubmissions on the real one.
Will testing my paper make it match itself later?
It can, if the test submission is saved to the student paper repository. Pre-checks run without repository storage avoid this.
Does a test show the AI score?
Through your course, usually not, because the AI report is normally instructor-only. A pre-check service includes it.
Can I check my Turnitin score before submitting?
Yes: through a draft assignment if your course has one, by resubmitting if allowed, or with a pre-submission check that returns both Turnitin reports to you.
