0% Similarity on Turnitin: Good News or a Problem?

How-to guidesBy the AIandSimilarityReports.com team4 min read

A 0% similarity score on Turnitin means no text in your paper matched any source in Turnitin's databases. It shows as a blue icon. Usually that is good news, but for a paper with quotes and references, 0% is unusual, and sometimes it means the report did not check what you think it checked.

Four reasons you got 0% similarity

1. Your writing is original and filters removed the rest

If your instructor excluded the bibliography, quotes and small matches, a carefully written paper can genuinely score 0%. This is the most common reason and nothing to worry about.

2. The file had no readable text

A scanned PDF, a photo of a page or text saved as an image gives Turnitin nothing to compare. The report runs, finds no words to match, and shows 0%. Check the word count on the report. If it is far lower than your real word count, this is the cause. Export from Word as a PDF or upload the .docx instead.

3. The report is still processing

Some integrations show a blank or grey icon while the report generates, which can be mistaken for 0%. Wait a few minutes and refresh. See Turnitin report pending.

4. Hidden characters or formatting tricks

Turnitin checks for replaced characters and hidden text, which some tools use to push the score down. These are reported as integrity flags. A 0% score with an integrity flag draws far more attention than a normal 12%.

Is 0% similarity good?

For an original essay, yes. Markers do not expect 0%, and they do not penalise it either. A normal referenced paper usually lands between 5% and 15%. See what each percentage means.

0% similarity does not mean 0% AI

The AI writing report is separate. AI-generated text is new text, so it rarely matches anything and often scores very low on similarity. Our sample below scored 1% similarity and 51% AI. If you used AI tools, the similarity score is not the number to look at.

Low similarity, high AI: a real example

Both screenshots below come from the same 24-page, 6,364-word paper. The similarity report found 1% overall similarity. The AI writing report flagged 51% of the qualifying text as likely AI-generated. Tap either one to see it full size.

Quick checks for a 0% report

  • Does the word count on the report match your paper?
  • Is the integrity flags count zero?
  • Does the filter list show which items were excluded?
  • Has the AI writing report been checked as well?

Frequently asked questions

Is 0% similarity on Turnitin possible?

Yes, especially when the bibliography, quotes and small matches are excluded from an original paper.

Can 0% similarity mean the report failed?

Yes. A scanned PDF or text saved as an image has nothing to compare, so the report shows 0%. Check the word count on the report.

Does 0% similarity mean no AI?

No. AI-generated text rarely matches existing sources, so it often scores very low on similarity. The AI score is a separate report.
