What Does Yellow Mean on Turnitin? Yellow Originality Report Explained

How-to guidesBy the AIandSimilarityReports.com team5 min read

Short answer: on the standard Turnitin scale, yellow means 25 to 49% of your paper matches other sources. It is the middle band. It does not automatically mean plagiarism, but most markers will open the report and look closely.

Where yellow sits on the scale

ColourSimilarity score
BlueNo matching text
GreenOne word up to 24%
Yellow25 to 49%
Orange50 to 74%
Red75 to 100%

Yellow highlights inside the report are different. Highlight colours are assigned per source, so yellow highlighted text simply matches whichever source was given yellow.

Is a yellow originality report bad?

Not automatically. Yellow is a signal to look, not a finding of plagiarism. A 30% report made mostly of quoted, cited passages and an unfiltered reference list may be fine once filters are applied. A 30% report where most of the match comes from one uncited source is a problem. Your instructor will open the match groups and the top sources to decide.

Yellow originality report on Canvas

On Canvas, a yellow icon (or flag) beside your submission means the same thing: 25 to 49% similarity. Click it to open the report. Blue is 0%, green 1 to 24%, orange 50 to 74% and red 75 to 100%. Full scale: Canvas originality report colours.

Why your report is yellow

  • Bibliography not excluded. Reference lists match other papers that cite the same works.
  • Too many direct quotes. Even correctly cited quotes count toward the total unless quotes are filtered.
  • Close paraphrasing. Rewording a source sentence by sentence still matches.
  • Templates and standard wording. Lab reports, legal definitions and assignment questions copied into your answer all match.
  • Your own earlier submission. A draft saved to the repository can match your final version.

Yellow in the AI writing report?

Turnitin's AI writing report does not use yellow. Its highlights are cyan (likely AI-generated) and purple (AI-generated then AI-paraphrased). If you see yellow, you are looking at the similarity report.

How to bring a yellow score down

  1. Open the match groups and fix every item under Not Cited or Quoted.
  2. Rewrite Missing Quotations passages in your own structure and words, then cite them.
  3. Replace long direct quotes with short quotes plus your own explanation.
  4. Remove assignment questions or templates from the body if allowed.
  5. Re-check before submitting so you are not relying on resubmission attempts.
