Turnitin AI Report Checker in Scotland: Check Before You Submit
Scottish universities run coursework through Turnitin in Moodle, Blackboard and Canvas, and some have switched on its AI writing detector. If you study in Scotland, a Turnitin AI report checker shows you the AI score and flagged sentences that your marker may see.
A Scottish example: Robert Gordon University
Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen switched on Turnitin's AI writing detection in October 2023, six months after Turnitin released it, while noting concerns about reliability. It did so to help staff form academic judgements alongside other evidence, and it treats unauthorised AI use as "false authorship" under its student misconduct procedure. RGU has also redesigned assessment briefs so staff state whether generative AI is allowed, with a tiered approach planned from 2025/26.
Other Scottish institutions have taken their own decisions, so check your university's guidance.
Why Scottish students check first
- Honours dissertations: Turnitin's AI detection handles files of 300 to 30,000 words, covering most honours and taught master's dissertations.
- "False authorship" rules: where unauthorised AI use is misconduct, knowing which passages read as AI matters.
- International students: Scottish universities enrol large numbers of postgraduates writing in a second language.
- Gaelic-medium work: receives similarity checking only, since Gaelic is not supported for AI detection.
