Turnitin AI Report Checker in England: A Guide for English University Students

Country guidesBy the AIandSimilarityReports.com team7 min read

Most English universities run coursework through Turnitin, usually via Moodle, Blackboard or Canvas. If you are studying in England, here is how your work is checked, what markers actually do with an AI score, and how to see your own Turnitin AI report before submission day.

The submission route at English universities

Most coursework in England goes through a Turnitin assignment inside the virtual learning environment. You upload, Turnitin generates a similarity report, and, where the university has enabled it, an AI writing indicator appears for the marker only. Many modules let you submit a draft first and see your similarity score. Almost none show you the AI score.

What happens if your AI score is high

At English universities that use the indicator, a high score usually starts a process rather than ends one:

  1. The marker reviews the highlighted passages and compares them with your other work.
  2. You may be asked for drafts, notes or version history.
  3. You may be invited to an informal discussion or a viva to talk through your work.
  4. Only then might a case go to an academic misconduct panel.

Knowing in advance which paragraphs are flagged lets you revise them in your own voice, and keep your drafts ready, before any of this starts.

Common triggers in English university writing

  • Generic introductions and conclusions that restate the question.
  • Literature review paragraphs that summarise sources in a uniform, list-like way.
  • Text rewritten by AI grammar or paraphrasing tools.
  • Machine-translated sections from another language.

Turnitin AI requirements to remember

  • At least 300 words of long-form prose; up to 30,000 words per file.
  • Accepted files: .docx, .pdf, .txt and .rtf.
  • Scores from 1% to 19% appear as an asterisk with no highlights.

What your marker sees: sample reports

Both screenshots below come from the same 24-page, 6,364-word paper. The similarity report found 1% overall similarity. The AI writing report flagged 51% of the qualifying text as likely AI-generated. Tap either one to see it full size.

Frequently asked questions

How do English universities use the Turnitin AI score?

Where it is enabled, markers treat it as a prompt for a conversation or a viva, not as proof. Most academic misconduct procedures require further evidence.

What word count does Turnitin AI detection need?

At least 300 words of long-form prose and no more than 30,000 words per file.

Does the check save my essay to Turnitin's database?

Our checks are run without adding your paper to the student paper repository, so your final university submission will not match against itself.
