Turnitin AI Report Checker in the Netherlands: Check Before You Submit
Dutch universities were early adopters of Turnitin's AI module, and on 6 October 2026 Turnitin added AI detection for Dutch-language text. Whether you write in Dutch or in one of the many English-taught programmes, your work can now receive an AI score.
How Dutch universities use it
- Maastricht University uses Turnitin Originality for plagiarism and AI checks. When Turnitin is selected, papers are checked for AI automatically.
- Wageningen University & Research switched the AI module on by default for teachers using Turnitin in Brightspace. The AI percentage appears next to the similarity percentage, and teachers are told to review it critically because of false positives and negatives.
Turnitin at Maastricht University
Maastricht University replaced its previous checker, Ouriginal, with Turnitin Originality in September 2023, and uses it to check papers and theses. What students should know:
- AI is checked automatically. The library's Turnitin FAQ says that if a teacher chooses Turnitin as the plagiarism check, the paper is automatically checked for AI as well.
- Teachers activate it per assignment in Canvas, and in PebblePad where it is enabled.
- Students cannot pre-check through UM. Staff log in with their UM account; students do not get their own Turnitin access, and the iThenticate checker used by researchers is not open to students.
- Dutch papers: the library's guide said the AI check did not yet work for Dutch. Turnitin added Dutch on 6 October 2026, so ask your faculty whether Dutch AI detection is now on.
What changed for Dutch-language work
Until October 2026 the AI check did not read Dutch, so Dutch papers received a similarity report alone. Turnitin's 6 October 2026 expansion added Dutch, which means scripties and essays written in Dutch can now be scored too. AI-paraphrase detection remains English-only.
Who should check first
- Students in English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes.
- Students writing a scriptie in Dutch, now covered by AI detection.
- International students writing in a second language.
