Turnitin Dutch AI Detection: Does Turnitin Detect AI in Dutch?
Yes, Turnitin now detects AI writing in Dutch. Since 6 October 2026, Dutch-language essays, papers and scripties can receive an AI writing score through Turnitin Originality, and through iThenticate 2.0 with the AI add-on. Until then, Dutch text got a similarity report only. Here is what changed for students in the Netherlands and Flanders.
What changed on 6 October 2026
- Dutch AI score. Dutch submissions now get an overall percentage of likely AI-generated text and highlighted sentences.
- Launched with German and Turkish. Turnitin now covers seven languages for AI detection.
- Older reports are not rescored. A scriptie checked before the launch has no Dutch AI score unless it is uploaded again.

How Dutch universities use Turnitin
- Maastricht University uses Turnitin Originality "for plagiarism and AI check." When a teacher chooses Turnitin, papers are checked for AI automatically. The library's guide said the AI check did not yet work for Dutch papers; with Turnitin's October 2026 launch, ask your faculty whether Dutch AI detection is now switched on.
- Wageningen University & Research turned the AI module on by default for teachers using Turnitin in Brightspace, with advice to read the percentage critically.
