Turnitin Arabic AI Detection: Does Turnitin Detect AI in Arabic?

Language guidesBy the AIandSimilarityReports.com team5 min read

Yes, Turnitin now detects AI writing in Arabic. Arabic AI detection went live on 18 August 2026, through Turnitin Originality and as an add-on for iThenticate. Theses, research papers and assignments in Modern Standard Arabic can now receive an AI percentage alongside the similarity report. Here is what it covers and what it does not.

What Turnitin's Arabic AI detection does

  • Modern Standard Arabic. Turnitin says the model "covers long-form writing in modern standard Arabic." It does not say the model is built for dialect writing.
  • One overall percentage of likely AI-generated text, plus highlighted passages, in the same report and indicator as English.
  • Automatic routing. Once your institution enables it, Arabic submissions go to the Arabic model with no extra step.
  • Where it runs. Turnitin Originality (inside your LMS) and iThenticate as an add-on.

Accuracy

Turnitin states the Arabic model "holds a false positive rate under 1% for documents flagged at 20% or more AI-generated content." Below 20%, Turnitin shows an asterisk (*%) instead of a number, because low scores are less reliable. Turnitin also says the result is an indicator for educators, not proof, and should be read alongside a student's writing history and the institution's AI policy.

Requirements

  • At least 300 words of prose; no more than 30,000 words per file.
  • .docx, .pdf, .txt or .rtf, under 100 MB. Make sure a PDF contains real text, not scanned pages.
  • Mostly in Arabic. A paper with long English sections may be scored by the wrong model.

Who should check an Arabic paper first

  • Master's and doctoral candidates in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain.
  • Faculty submitting Arabic articles to journals that use iThenticate.
  • Students who wrote in English with AI and translated the result into Arabic.
  • Students whose Arabic work was submitted before August 2026 and who are resubmitting it.
