Will Turnitin Detect My Own Work? Self-Plagiarism Explained
Yes, Turnitin can detect your own work if you submitted it before. When a paper goes into Turnitin's student paper repository, any later submission that reuses it shows up as a match, often labelled "Submitted to [your university]". That is how self-plagiarism is flagged, and it is a common reason Turnitin says you plagiarised when you didn't copy anyone. Here is why it happens and how to avoid it.
Does Turnitin detect self-plagiarism?
Turnitin does not know the earlier paper is yours. It sees matching text and shows the source. If your earlier essay was stored, reusing paragraphs from it produces matches just like copying from anyone else. Many institutions treat reusing your own graded work without permission as self-plagiarism.
Why does Turnitin say I plagiarised?
| Cause | What you see | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Your own earlier submission | "Submitted to..." student paper match | Ask your instructor to exclude it, or rewrite |
| A draft you or a classmate submitted | High match to one student paper | Instructor can delete the draft from the repository |
| Quotes and references | Many small matches | Normal; see high similarity from references |
| Common phrases and templates | Short matches across many sources | Usually ignored by instructors |
| A free "Turnitin" checker stored your paper | Match to a paper you never submitted to class | Use a checker that does not store papers |
More on reading matches: how to read a Turnitin report.
Will checking my paper first make it match itself?
Only if the checker saves it to the repository. Ours does not, so your final submission will not match your own check. That is also why your instructor's draft assignments are sometimes set to "no repository".
What about AI detection on my own work?
Turnitin's AI model can occasionally flag human writing, especially formal, generic text. Turnitin says the AI score should not be the only basis for action. If your own writing is flagged, you can rework the highlighted sentences or have our editors do it:
