Turnitin AI Report Checker in South Africa: Where Universities Stand
South African universities have moved fast on AI detection, in opposite directions. Some of the country's best-known institutions have dropped Turnitin's AI score, while others still use it alongside human review. If you study in South Africa, a Turnitin AI report checker shows you what the detector says about your work, whichever way your faculty leans.
Where South African universities stand
| Institution | Position on AI detection |
|---|---|
| University of Cape Town | Stopped using AI detection tools such as Turnitin's AI score from 1 October 2025, under its AI in Education Framework |
| Stellenbosch University | Discontinued Turnitin's AI text detection at the end of 2025 |
| University of the Free State | Discontinued AI detection software, keeping Turnitin similarity tools |
| Wits University | Never adopted AI detection tools |
| Nelson Mandela University | Names Turnitin's AI indicator as a broad indication, not definitive evidence |
| NWU, UJ, VUT, Unisa | Use detection reports as one input, with human review before any case proceeds |

Why the check still matters in South Africa
- Mixed policies inside one university. Departments and supervisors can still ask questions about writing that "feels" AI-generated, even where the tool is off.
- Similarity checking continues everywhere. Turnitin's similarity report remains standard, including for postgraduate dissertations.
- Journal submissions. Postgraduates publishing internationally face AI screening by publishers.
- Distance learners. Large distance-learning programs rely on written assessments, which makes written evidence of originality more important.
- English as an additional language. Many South African students write in their second or third language, a group detectors have been criticised for flagging more often.
Language note
Turnitin's AI detection does not support Afrikaans, isiZulu or isiXhosa as of October 2026. Work in those languages receives similarity checking but no AI score. English submissions get both.
Sample Turnitin reports
Both screenshots below come from the same 24-page, 6,364-word paper. The similarity report found 1% overall similarity. The AI writing report flagged 51% of the qualifying text as likely AI-generated. Tap either one to see it full size.
