Turnitin Spanish AI Detector: Does Turnitin Detect AI in Spanish?

Language guidesBy the AIandSimilarityReports.com team6 min read

Yes, Turnitin detects AI writing in Spanish. It launched a dedicated Spanish AI detector on 12 September 2024, and improved it again in May 2026. A Spanish essay, TFG, TFM or tesis submitted through Turnitin can get an AI percentage and highlighted sentences, just like an English paper. Here is what the Spanish detector covers, what it misses, and how to check your work before you submit.

How Turnitin's Spanish AI detector works

  • A separate model. Spanish text is not run through the English detector. Turnitin trained a model on Spanish academic writing, and submissions in Spanish are routed to it automatically.
  • Same report layout. You get an overall percentage of likely AI-generated text and highlighted sentences, in the same format as English reports.
  • Launch and updates. At launch Turnitin said the model was trained to detect text from GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. On 5 May 2026 it released an improved Spanish model "while minimizing false positives." Reports created before that date are not rescored unless the paper is resubmitted.
  • Where it runs. Turnitin Originality, inside Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and Brightspace, and iThenticate 2.0 with the AI add-on.

What the Spanish detector does not cover

Similarity reportYesYes
AI writing percentageYesYes
Highlighted AI sentencesYesYes
AI-paraphrased text group (QuillBot and similar)NoYes
AI bypasser ("humanizer") detectionNoYes

Catalan, Basque, Galician and Portuguese are not supported. Papers in those languages get a similarity report but no AI score.

Requirements for a Spanish AI score

  • At least 300 words of prose. Bullet points, tables and reference lists do not count.
  • No more than 30,000 words per file. A long tesis doctoral may need checking chapter by chapter.
  • .docx, .pdf, .txt or .rtf, under 100 MB.
  • Mostly in Spanish. A paper that mixes long English and Spanish sections can give an unreliable score.

Spanish AI detector vs Spanish plagiarism checker

These are two different checks, and Turnitin runs both on the same upload:

  • Plagiarism (similarity) check: compares your Spanish text with web pages, journals and student papers. It finds copied or closely paraphrased passages, including from Spanish-language sources.
  • AI detection: estimates how much of the prose reads as machine-generated. It finds nothing to "match"; it judges the writing itself.

A paper written with ChatGPT in Spanish usually scores low on similarity and high on AI. A paper copied from a Spanish website scores the opposite.

What raises a Spanish AI score

  • Text written in English by AI and machine-translated into Spanish.
  • Generic, evenly structured paragraphs with no personal analysis, local examples or course-specific references.
  • Heavy rewriting with AI "improve my Spanish" tools, which smooths prose in ways the detector notices.

Turnitin warns that its AI score may produce false positives and should not be the only basis for action against a student. Keep your drafts and notes as evidence of your process.

Who should check a Spanish paper first

  • Students in Spain finishing a TFG or TFM.
  • Students in Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Peru at Turnitin universities.
  • Students in the US taking Spanish-language courses or writing in Spanish as a second language.
  • Researchers submitting Spanish manuscripts to journals that use iThenticate.

Sample Turnitin AI and similarity reports

These samples come from an English paper: 1% similarity, 51% AI. A Spanish report uses the same layout and the same score page.
