Turnitin Japanese AI Detection: Can Turnitin Detect AI in Japanese?
Yes, Turnitin detects AI writing in Japanese. It launched Japanese AI writing detection on 2 April 2025, the second language after Spanish to get its own model. A Japanese report, レポート or 卒業論文 submitted through Turnitin can receive an AI percentage, as long as your university has the feature. Here is what it covers and how to check your work first.
How Japanese AI detection works
- Its own model. Turnitin trained a separate model on Japanese writing. At launch it targeted text likely generated by GPT-4, GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini.
- Same report. You get an overall percentage of likely AI-generated text, in the same format as English reports.
- Sold as an add-on at launch. Turnitin introduced it as a separate add-on to Turnitin Originality and iThenticate, so not every Japanese university has it. Ask your instructor or library whether your institution licensed it.
Why Turnitin added Japanese
Turnitin built the Japanese model after customer requests, citing a survey of 11,590 undergraduates at 31 Japanese universities in which half said they now use generative AI regularly, up 22 percentage points on the year before.
What Japanese detection does not cover
| Feature | Japanese | English |
|---|---|---|
| Similarity report | Yes | Yes |
| AI writing percentage | Yes (if licensed) | Yes |
| AI-paraphrase detection | No | Yes |
| AI bypasser detection | No | Yes |
Turnitin's guide states: "our Spanish and Japanese AI detectors do not include AI paraphrasing or AI bypasser detection capabilities."
Requirements
- Long-form prose. Turnitin's published minimum is 300 words of prose and the maximum is 30,000 words per file. It does not publish a separate character count for Japanese, so very short reports may not receive a score.
- .docx, .pdf, .txt or .rtf, under 100 MB.
- Mostly in Japanese. Long English sections in a Japanese paper can confuse the result.
Who in Japan should check first
- Students writing a 卒業論文 (graduation thesis) or 修士論文 at a Turnitin university.
- International students writing in Japanese as a second language, whose careful, simple phrasing can resemble AI output.
- Students in English-taught programmes, whose English papers are checked by the full English detector.
- Researchers sending Japanese or English manuscripts to journals that use iThenticate.
