Can Turnitin Detect Chinese AI Writing?
No. Turnitin cannot detect AI writing in Chinese. Its AI detector supports seven languages (English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Dutch, German and Turkish), and Chinese is not one of them. A paper written in Chinese gets a similarity report but no AI score. A paper that mixes Chinese and English is the risky case.
What happens when you submit a Chinese paper
- Similarity report: yes. Turnitin compares Chinese text with its databases and returns a similarity percentage as usual.
- AI writing report: no. Turnitin's guide says that if a paper in a non-supported language is submitted, the detector does not process it and no AI report is generated. Your instructor sees an empty or error state instead of a percentage.
- Simplified and Traditional Chinese are both unsupported.
The mixed-language problem
Many students in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore write mainly in English with Chinese quotations, or in Chinese with English sections. Turnitin sends each submission to one language model, so a mixed paper can be scored unreliably. A 2026 report in a Hong Kong Baptist University student publication described a nursing student whose mixed Chinese-English project was flagged at 40% AI. Once the languages were separated, the score dropped below 20%.
If your paper mixes languages:
- Check it before submitting, so you know what your instructor will see.
- Keep Chinese quotations short and clearly marked.
- Save drafts and notes in case you are asked how you wrote it.
Translated AI text
A common question is whether writing in Chinese with ChatGPT and translating it into English avoids detection. The English version is checked by Turnitin's full English model, including AI-paraphrase and bypasser detection. Machine-translated text often reads as smooth and generic, which is the pattern the detector looks for. Translation is not a safe route.
What Chinese-speaking universities use instead
- Hong Kong: CUHK uses its own system, VeriGuide, for submitting text-based assignments, and course outlines state which of its AI-use approaches applies. Other universities use Turnitin for English work. See our Hong Kong guide.
- Mainland China: universities commonly use domestic checkers for Chinese theses.

Both screenshots below come from the same 24-page, 6,364-word paper. The similarity report found 1% overall similarity. The AI writing report flagged 51% of the qualifying text as likely AI-generated. Tap either one to see it full size.

Frequently asked questions
Can Turnitin detect AI writing in Chinese?
No. Chinese is not one of Turnitin's seven AI detection languages, so a Chinese paper gets a similarity report but no AI score.
What about a paper that mixes Chinese and English?
Mixed papers can be scored unreliably, because Turnitin routes each submission to one language model. Check a mixed paper before submitting.
Does translating Chinese AI text into English avoid detection?
No. The English version is checked by Turnitin's full English model, and machine-translated text often reads like AI output.
Does CUHK use Turnitin?
CUHK uses its own VeriGuide system for submitting text-based assignments, and each course states its approach to AI use.
